Apprenticeship Overview 

This standard prepares practitioners who: 

  • Support safeguarding arrangements that protect children, young people and vulnerable adults. 

  • Promote safe working practices across organisations. 

  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external safeguarding partners. 

  • Contribute to effective safeguarding procedures, recording and reporting. 

Core capabilities include: 

  • Safeguarding legislation and statutory guidance 

  • Risk identification and referral processes 

  • Professional recording and case management 

  • Multi-agency working 

  • Information sharing and confidentiality 

  • Prevention, early intervention and safeguarding culture 

  • Communication with vulnerable individuals and professionals 

Tutor/Assessor – Job Description 

Role purpose 

To deliver high-quality teaching, coaching and curriculum that enables apprentices to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) required to operate effectively as Safeguarding Support Officers across public, private and voluntary sector organisations. 

Key responsibilities 

  • To deliver structured teaching aligned to Safeguarding Support Officer KSBs: 

  • Safeguarding legislation, statutory guidance and organisational policy 

  • Child and adult safeguarding procedures 

  • Risk assessment, reporting and referrals 

  • Professional record keeping and information management 

  • Multi-agency safeguarding practice 

  • Professional boundaries, confidentiality and ethical practice 
     

  • To facilitate development of: 

  • Professional judgement 

  • Communication and interpersonal skills 

  • Risk awareness 

  • Decision-making and problem-solving 

  • Collaborative working with safeguarding partners 
     

  • To support apprentices to: 

  • Build portfolios of workplace evidence 

  • Apply safeguarding principles in practice 

  • Prepare confidently for End-Point Assessment (EPA) 

 

  • To embed: 

  • Equality, diversity and inclusion 

  • Trauma-informed practice 

  • Prevent, domestic abuse, exploitation and contextual safeguarding 

  • Confidentiality and GDPR 

  • Professional standards and continuous development 

Essential occupational competence 

Tutors must demonstrate current, relevant sector experience, typically in: 

  • Safeguarding 

  • Child protection 

  • Adult safeguarding 

  • Education 

  • Health and Social Care 

  • Local Authority or voluntary sector safeguarding services 

Experience of: 

  • Applying safeguarding legislation and statutory guidance 

  • Supporting safeguarding referrals and investigations 

  • Working within multi-agency safeguarding arrangements 

  • Maintaining accurate safeguarding records 

  • Managing confidential and sensitive information 

Knowledge of: 

  • Safeguarding legislation and guidance 

  • Risk assessment frameworks 

  • Information sharing protocols 

  • Prevent Duty 

  • Domestic abuse and exploitation 

  • Professional boundaries and ethical practice 

Understanding of: 

  • Early intervention 

  • Multi-agency collaboration 

  • Professional accountability 

  • Safeguarding governance 

  • Continuous improvement within safeguarding services

Key Differentiator 

  • Strong combination of safeguarding expertise, professional judgement and partnership working. 

  • Tutors must be able to: 

  • Translate safeguarding legislation into practical workplace application. 

  • Demonstrate current safeguarding practice across sectors. 

  • Promote reflective practice, professional curiosity and effective safeguarding decision-making.

The post holder must maintain the confidentiality of information about clients, staff and other LMP stakeholders. Some work is confidential, and information gained must not be communicated to other persons except in the recognised course of duty. The post holder must always meet the requirements of the General Data Regulation Act.
